Young, Disabled, and Not Ready to Vote?

Coventry Youth Activists (CYA) want young disabled people to have a voice. CYA’s new #AccessibleVoting campaign is making sure disabled people aren’t left out of elections.

CYA came together because young disabled people were being left out of decisions that mattered. From tackling online disability hate to pushing for accessibility, we’ve proven that our voices are powerful. But now, a new challenge threatens our right to be heard. We need to make sure disabled people can vote.

Confusing Voter ID rules, inaccessible polling stations, and a lack of support mean too many of us risk losing our say. That’s not fair, and we won’t stand for it.

The next local elections are coming fast, and there’s a lot at stake. If we don’t act, many disabled people could be locked out of democracy now and in the future.

Lots of places are not t having local elections BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t get voter-ready! Our new campaign pack has all the details of what you can do or how you can support someone. Keep reading to find out how you can take action…

What makes voting hard?

  • Many don’t know what ID they need – The rules are confusing, and voter information isn’t always clear or accessible.

  • Election materials and guidance aren’t always accessible - e.g., lack of easy-read formats, Braille, or sign language.

  • Getting ID isn’t easy – If you don’t have a passport or driving license, applying for ID can be complicated and stressful.

  • Support isn’t guaranteed – Not all polling staff know how to assist disabled voters properly, and people with learning disabilities may not get the help they need.

  • Past experiences hold us back – If you’ve felt unheard before, it’s easy to think your vote doesn’t matter. But it does.
