CYA & OFCOM- Round Two

CYA had the pleasure of meeting Ofcom again in July, following the success of our previous gathering.

This time however, CYA had the opportunity to facilitate a conversation with not only CYA members but with young people from TeenVine. Not only were CYA able to bring together two key partners for this conversation, we also hosted our first hybrid meeting, meaning we were not only hearing from voices in the room, but also voices from as far as London too!

The conversation was part of Ofcom’s ongoing series of consultations around the Online Safety Act which will inform the new regulations Ofcom will be responsible for implementing.

This latest conversation between Ofcom, CYA and TeenVine, focused on content that is harmful to children (under 18’s) and were impressed Ofcom came to Coventry for a second time to hear the views and experiences of those impacted by hate and harm online.

We had some really difficult but important conversations, fortunately, those present felt CYA and Ofcom created the right conditions to be able to share.

Heidi told us “It was a safe space where I was able to share my thoughts on my experiences of online disability hate”.

Another young person told us “it was really important [for Ofcom] to get an understanding of what it is like for young people online.”

Our thoughts…

We feel like we learnt a lot from hosting our first event bringing together policy makers and young people and we definitely have things we want to implement next time- so watch this space!

Ultimately, we  were really proud of being able to host this conversation and elevate the voices of other young people.
